South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a new COVID-19 vaccination certificate, which he said would facilitate travel and access to events requiring proof of vaccination.

“Streamlining and standardizing vaccination evidence will also go a long way in easing a number of international travel restrictions to and from our country,” he said, but gave no deployment schedule.

In a televised speech, he said he urged Britain to ease travel restrictions on his country after discussing the issue with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“We both agreed that decisions of this nature should be informed by science, and we both hope for a positive outcome when the matter is considered in the coming days by their scientists.”

A Downing Street spokesperson, as quoted by the AFP news agency, said leaders recognize the challenges posed by travel restrictions.

Mr Ramaphosa has also eased local restrictions in the event of a pandemic, including reducing the hours of a national curfew, now in place from midnight to 4 a.m. He ended the ban on weekend alcohol sales and allowed larger public gatherings.

He said the government aims to administer the first 250,000 vaccines every weekday until mid-December.
