The pre-sale of the iPhone 4 is becoming a trend: a huge demand equals overflowing sites. It was no different in Korea, where the KT carrier's website was congested by consumers. Before closing the site, the carrier (and its 2,900 outlets) pre-sold 130,000 iPhone 4s in 13 hours – or 10,000 Apple phones per hour.
The figure of 130,000 is nothing compared to the 600,000 orders placed the first day in the United States, but represents a significant increase over the initial demand of Apple's previous device, the iPhone 3GS. At the launch of the 3GS in 2009, KT had accepted 14,500 orders in advance the first day.
In addition, this figure reflects the importance of Koreans for the Apple brand. The launch of the iPhone 4 in the country has been delayed from July 30 to September.
The latest handset that South Koreans rushed to buy was the Samsung Galaxy S based on Android in July. Although the phone had 300,000 initial sales, it took 19 days.
