summary
From the beginning, the current outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was worrisome. The northeastern part of the country suffers from poor road infrastructure and intermittent health services and attacks from rebels, making a coordinated international effort to fight the disease all the more difficult. To make matters worse, the DRC is currently grappling with a political crisis related to the disputed results of its long-awaited presidential election on December 30.
According to the latest WHO report, these first fears are now coming true. With 680 cases, the Ebola epidemic in the DRC is the second largest in history and one can expect a resurgence of cases in the near future, as the disease bends towards large urban centers. It seems that the first case of crossing the border of this epidemic is only a matter of time.
