Southampton 1-3 Liverpool: Salah seizes his moment while Liverpool, in search of thrills, returns to the avant-garde

There will be no more fingernails on Merseyside if this continues. The title race in the Premier League is still topical, but once again, the Reds had to move away from the edge of the cliff to stay in that position.

As the stakes increase, Jurgen Klopp's team simply refuses to take the easy path.

In a world of statistics, there are two that tell you everything you need to know about this team. The first is that they took more points after losing positions than any other team this season, the second is that they scored 21 times in the last 15 minutes of matches, again the most of the league.

Their last act of escape took place at St Mary's, where they were tormented by a Southampton team fighting a battle between them. Theirs is at the bottom of the table, but they almost had their say at the other end. In a noisy and colorful atmosphere, the Saints almost did a favor in Manchester City. Almost.

They led by Shane Long, capitalizing on a nervous and faulty start to Liverpool. For 20 minutes, Klopp's team was as bad as the whole season, unable to pbad, unable to defend, unable to settle. Fortunately last weekend, was it the night of their luck?

Not enough. We should know better than to write this team. People do it all season. This team takes the shots and they get up. They were stunned by Long but, as they did all year, they found a way to win. "The mentality, huh?" Klopp beamed afterwards. "It's brilliant."

Heroes emerged, some familiar, others improbable. It's a team match, says Klopp, and it has been proven here.

Naby Keita picked the fastest time possible to score his first goal for the club, equalizing before half-time. "A fantastic moment," said Klopp.

And then, as time pbaded and the level of stress increased, Mohamed Salah found the goal that triggered incredible and unforgettable scenes in the far end.

The drought that marked the goals of the Egyptian seemed to go until a ninth match. He had been chained and ruffled, harbaded and in a hurry.

And then, with only 10 minutes remaining, came his moment.

Gaining a pbad from Jordan Henderson at 15 yards in his half of the field, Salah is headed to the goal. Southampton was attacking from a corner, but they were retired while Salah was running on them. Roberto Firmino, breaking a belly, stood beside him on the left, realizing a situation for two. Salah must surely have pbaded him.

He did. The left foot, right in the bottom left corner of Angus Gunn's goal.

It was his 50th goal in the Premier League for Liverpool. He reached this mark faster than anyone else in club history. He scored some big, Salah, but that could be as important as anybody. He triggered a ruckus. Salah was reserved for taking off his shirt. The best yellow card of his career, he says. The fans will pay his fine, if he wants it.

Just for good measure, Henderson, introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half, made a terrific come-out with a late goal. It was his first time for over 18 months. The captain's celebration, his face distorted by a mixture of joy and relief, spoke on behalf of his followers. They want that, Liverpool. They want it badly.

He is always there for them too. Five games from the end, they are again in charge. Manchester City, who would have looked with joy for 80 minutes, will have made a face in the last 10.

This team simply does not want to give in. Not yet, anyway. Whenever they reach the cliff, they retreat.

They are sometimes terrifying, but Liverpool gives his fans the ride of their lives.
