Gareth Southgate was thrilled to see the preparations for the penalty shootout bear fruit – but the disappointment of finishing third in the League of Nations only added to the desire of the English team to take the lead.

"We have always done it every summer. I remember the first summer we played in Scotland and France and we learned a lot from the game in France but we were really unhappy with the performance – and that made us leave and plan next year.
"The training I've seen from players in recent days has given me energy, because I see the commitment is to go further with England, they are not happy with their current position.
"And that, as a coach, sometimes gives you a boost, because you think you're the only one driving things and riding all night trying to prepare for the match and fix it." Another game of the other night.
"So I get the energy from all my staff and all the players. It's a fantastic group, I must say, and you saw it in the mentality they showed today during the 120 minutes).
"But we must continue to improve and we will not settle until we do."
