Luciano Spalletti confirmed that Mauro Icardi had withdrawn from Inter's squad to face Rapid Vienna after learning he was no longer captain.
Inter's preparations for the trip to Vienna were tainted by the consequences of their decision to remove Icardi from their captaincy, but Spalletti said he still hoped to be able to count on the attacker.
"Tomorrow will be a very important match. We will then have time to clarify Icardi's position, "the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
"It was a difficult and painful decision, but supported by everyone and made for the good of Inter and the team.
"His no-show? He did not want to be part of the team. He was called. He was disappointed, but it was also difficult for us to make that decision and announce it.
"There is a situation that needs to be remedied and I said it after Parma. What happened confirms it.
"If someone thinks anything but the result tomorrow night, he is wrong to do it.
"We made a decision at a convenient time that was well thought out, even if it was very painful.
"Things around him have bothered him and the team he's headed. We must now focus our attention on tomorrow's game. "
