Special polio vaccination campaign begins on June 17

ISLAMABAD: Polio vaccination campaigns are scheduled to begin in central tanks on June 17 to vaccinate children under five.

Many front-line workers will have to go door-to-door during the special vaccination campaign of more than 10.25 million children.

According to a press release issued by the National Center for Emergency Operations, 23 cases of poliovirus were reported in the country in 2019.

Cases have been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) districts in Bannu, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan and Shangla. In addition, three cases were reported to Mir Ali and two to Miranshah.

In addition to K-P, two cases of poliovirus have also been reported in Sindh – two from Karachi and one from Larkana. In Punjab, three cases were reported in Lahore.

The EOC statement indicated that the special vaccination campaign was planned in all major reservoirs as part of the efforts to eradicate the virus.

"The Bannu division has been declared very sensitive, with half of all cases originating. At present, Bannu is our top priority, "said Babar bin Atta, the Prime Minister's Office for Polio Eradication.

He asked all parents to play their role and urged them to avoid false news and propaganda against the polio vaccine.
