GREAT RAPIDS, Michigan – April is Parkinson's Awareness Month. According to the Parkinson Foundation, 930,000 people in the United States will be living with Parkinson's by 2020. It is therefore important that we recognize all the warning signs and know what to do if we suspect that a being expensive could be suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Dr. Ali Rushna, MD, and a neurosurgeon from the medical group Spectrum Health came to talk about the warning signs and awareness of Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease is a central nervous system disorder that affects movement, including tremors. Approximately 60,000 Americans are affected and diagnosed with PD each year. Men are 1.5 times more likely to get Parkinson's disease than women and their incidence increases with age.
The treatment of each person with Parkinson's disease is based on their symptoms.
The most common symptoms of Parkinson's disease are listed below:
– Trembling
– slow movements
– stiffness of the limbs
– Problems of walking and balance
– The symptoms are not one size fits all
Spectrum Health will host a free Doctrinal Dialogue event on Thursday, April 11th at Calvin College's Prince Conference Center. This panel will present a discussion of Spectrum Health's new research and treatment options and answer questions from the community.
