Five deaf students will enter history by reaching more than 350 children from across Ghana to spell out the upcoming 2019 Spelling Bee National Finale on February 2nd.

The participation of Deaf students from Tetteh Ocloo Public School in this year's competition is the quota of the Young Educators Foundation for Inclusive Education.

"We have always believed in the Ghanaian child, no matter what perceived challenges they might have. Our children must be among the most literate children in the world.

"Therefore, The Spelling Bee must continue to open its doors and arms to all children in Ghana," said Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director, Young Educators Foundation.

The Spelling Bee is a literacy program that teaches children ages 6 to 13 the basics of spelling and how to use the English language effectively. In 11 years, the program has reached nearly 20,000 people across the country.

In 2018, Nagies Angels' Shifa Amankwa-Gabbey Education Center became Kumasi's first spell to emerge victorious, to the great pride and delight of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President Akufo-Addo.

The two leaders paid tribute to Shifa for her outstanding performance in honoring Asanteman and Ghana.

This year's competition, which began in March 2018, attracted more than 4,000 hopes for the coveted title of The bee spelling 2019 Champion.

After intensive training and rigorous spelling and vocabulary tests, 446 students qualified as national finalists. Students come from Ashanti, Greater Accra, East, Central, West and North regions.

On Saturday, the winner of the contest will represent Ghana at the 92nd edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. Ghana continues to be the only African country to participate in this international spelling competition.
