FuboTV sports streaming service and Viacom have announced this morning a new distribution contract that will see fuboTV bring the entertainment networks as part of its television packages. The deal includes channels like MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., BET, CMT, Comedy Central, VH1, Paramount Network, TeenNick and many others. A selection of these will be added to the fuboTV base package, while an expanded group of channels will be made available to the first fuboTV package, "fubo Extra".
FuboTV was originally a streaming service focused on football, but the company has been steadily expanding its range of products beyond sports channels in recent months. Today, it carries networks such as CBS, AMC, NBC and FX, and now describes itself as a "sports first streaming service".
That is to say, fuboTV is positioned with cable cutters as a service to choose in case of abandonment of traditional pay television, but especially with regard to access to the sport – with a little entertainment mixed with the variety.
Last fall, fuboTV had close to 250,000 subscribers.
The new agreement with Viacom will make fuboTV an even more competitive competitor, competing with streaming services such as Sling TV, DirecTV Now and Philo – which also broadcasts Viacom channels.
Viacom announces the availability of its nine core multimedia networks – BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 – for the fuboTV base package, "fubo". The package will include BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, Logo, MTV2, MTV Clbadic, MTV Live, MTVU, Nick Music, Nicktoons and TeenNick.
Meanwhile, fuboTV's Spanish language package, "fubo Latino", will receive Viacom's Telefe and MTV Tr3 networks.
The deal will bring some of Viacom's best live streaming shows, such as MTV's "MTV's MTV" MTV's "The Daily Show" and "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles".
"FuboTV is emerging as a major force in the field of streaming television and the addition of Viacom's multimedia networks as a cornerstone of fuboTV's entertainment offering demonstrates the power and popularity of our brands and our programming, "said Tom Gorke, vice president, Distribution and Business Development, for Viacom, in a statement. "This is a great opportunity to continue to expand our audience and audience across the OTT landscape and connect with our fans wherever they use content," he added.
The decision to offer more entertainment comes at a time when fuboTV's competitors – such as AT & T's Dish's Sling TV and DirecTV Now – are seeing their growth diminish as the streaming TV space becomes more competitive. Customers now have several choices in this market – and with rising over-the-top live TV prices, they're expecting to get a well-designed, stable, and extensive channel selection, regardless of the service they choose to subscribe to.
FuboTV was able to capitalize on this demand by targeting cord cutters with a service that must work properly from the first day to meet the requirements of live streaming, while deploying more advanced features such as recommendations and support for 4K HDR, for example.
With this significant expansion of entertainment programming through the Viacom agreement, fuboTV may be able to attract more subscribers frustrated by the more basic streaming services offered by Dish and AT & T. FuboTV may not have previously considered these customers because they did not have as many entertainment options as others.
Viacom channels are not yet online on fuboTV, but will be available "soon," the companies said, without providing a specific release date.
