RIP the great Stanley Donen, some feat to have several clbadics in both musicals, but also comedies, thrillers, dramas. Having done on the city, singing in the rain, 7 wives for 7 brothers, it is always nice, funny, charade, two for the road, dazzled … wow! pic.twitter.com/MeArtLTaZE

In 1998, director Martin Scorcese awarded Donen an Oscar "in thanks for a set of works of grace, elegance, spirit and visual innovation" .

In his thank you speech, he performed an impromptu song and dance routine while holding his Oscar.

The key to the success of a film, he once said, was a good screenplay, good songs and great actors. "When the shoot starts, you show up and you stay away."
