Mr. Joseph M. Forson, CEO of Tema PDS, said such actions could affect the electricity distribution system and plunge a sector into unexpected power outages.
Mr. Forson warned that PDS would ensure that these people, when captured, are prosecuted in order to deter others.
He gave the warning after a Seidu was apprehended in a Tema Community Five substation for allegedly stealing copper ground wire components in the distribution system.
The ground wire is part of the grounding system and transmits information to enable faults in the distribution system to be detected and to block electrical leakage in the system.
He congratulated the residents of the five SSNIT apartments in the Tema community for apprehending Seidu while calling on others to emulate them and help the PDS by searching for such unscrupulous people in their communities.
Ms. Cynthia Bannerman, PDS director for Tema South District, told reporters that residents reported the incident on Wednesday to PDS staff, who then informed the police of two localities.
Ms. Bannerman stated that Seidu had in his possession a kitchen knife and part of the copper ground wire at the time of his arrest, but he declined to explain the reasons for his actions.
She added that even if Seidu's action did not have immediate impact on the power supply in the area, it could have had an impact on the distribution. Therefore, his outfit has put in place measures to prevent a start of fire in the transformer.
She said PDS officials understood that some recalcitrant residents were removing the fuse boxes from some of the substations, resulting in several power outages that had not been planned by the utility.
The Tema South district official said that the safety around the substations had intensified and that public awareness was being raised to make residents aware of the importance of substations in their communities.
