Coinbase announced, around 6:45 pm UTC, that it was about to launch the Stellar Lumen (XLM) digital badet on Coinbase Consumer (ie Coinbase.com), its platform for private investors and traditional traders, as well as the mobile application of Coinbase.

Stellar is "an open source, decentralized protocol for digital currency currency transfers that allows cross-border transactions between any currency pair;" This protocol, designed by Jed McCaleb (former CTO of Ripple) and Joyce Kim, is supported by the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation. Lumens (XLM) "are the native badet of the Stellar network."

On Wednesday (March 13th), as announced by CryptoGlobe, Coinbase announced that Stellar Lumen (XLM) has been added to Coinbase Pro, its platform for professional / experienced traders / investors.

Here's how Coinbase announced for the first time the news of the day on Twitter:

Support for Stellar Lumens (XLM) is launched at https://t.co/bCG11KveHS and in iOS and Android apps in the next 15 minutes. You may need to update your application to properly buy, sell, or convert XLM. We will update when XLM is fully operational. https://t.co/YSIYNPO4JP

And then three minutes later, this tweet has arrived:

XLM is now available at https://t.co/bCG11KveHS and in iOS and Android Coinbase applications. Coinbase customers can now login to buy, sell, convert, send, receive or store XLM. https://t.co/YSIYNPO4JP

Here's how the Coinbase blog article describes XLM:

"Stellar's cryptocurrency, Stellar Lumen (XLM), powers the Stellar payment network, and Stellar aims to connect banks, payment systems and consumers quickly and reliably." Since its launch in 2014, Its goal is to federate the global financial infrastructure so that banks, businesses and people can move quickly and cheaply. The Internet has connected computers all over the world so that information can be shared at the same time. On a global scale, Stellar aims to do the same for money.

Two things to note are:

  • "… incoming transfers and many shipments require the specification of an XLM destination tag."
  • "XLM will be available to customers in most jurisdictions, but will not be available initially for residents of the United Kingdom or the state of New York."

The announcement made today by Coinbase about XLM came about eight hours before Jesse Lund, IBM vice president for Blockchain and Digital Currency, made an announcement regarding the cross-border payment solution from his IBM Blockchain World Wire company (which runs on the Stellar network) at the Money20 / 20 Asia conference (March 19-21) in Singapore.

Jund McCaleb, co-founder of Stellar, Ripple and Mt Gox, will join Lund. Lund alluded to this announcement during an interview with Australia's largest comparison site, Finder.com.au, published Feb. 20.

Here's what Lund said about Blockchain World Wire in this interview:

"The architecture of World Wire is actually a cross-border payment network, whose magic is the ability to send a payment message indicating the payment message" Hey, I send you something; prepare yourselves! "and at the other end, the recipient ensures that the recipient of the shipment is not a bad actor or a bad actor, but once that happens and it happens very quickly, we send the worth, and this transfer of value is made possible by an ecosystem of digital settlement instruments, [Stellar] lumens is a …

IBM's long-term game is to be the network operator … So, subscribers, World Wire's customers, are market makers who actually provide payment, payment locations, and have them – even business customers and probably retail customers. So we provide a kind of channel through which money can flow in real time. "
