American animator Stephen Colbert will not come to New Zealand.
Variety reports that Colbert and a small team were planning to come here mid-week for a surprise trip, but this has now been canceled after the shooting of the Christchurch Mosque.
Colbert planned to visit the country at the invitation of New Zealand Premier Jacinda Ardern, invited to Last show last September as part of his visit to New York. Ardern received praise for her appearance, on which she even jokingly offered Colbert – a J.R.R. Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings aficionado – "Hobbiton citizenship."
"The world is still shocked by Friday's terrorist attack in New Zealand," Colbert said at the opening of the show. "Our thoughts go to the residents of the Al Noor and Linwood mosques and to the amazing people of New Zealand." I went there and it's the most beautiful country I've ever seen and the Kiwis are the nicest people I have ever met. "

Colbert said the trip, which had been kept secret, was to last a week from Wednesday. He did not reveal any places planned as part of the visit.
Variety reported that Colbert said that it was obviously not the time to visit and distract from the seriousness of the situation.
"I adore this country," he said. "If you've never been there, go.
"The people there are incredibly kind and hospitable, obviously we will not let ourselves go now, but we hope to do it in the future." We want to tell everyone how much we are sad and sorry for this country.
"One of the distinguishing features of New Zealand, and one of the things I've always thought about, is that this beautiful, isolated country, so far from the problems we take for granted here in the north from the equator.
"And now, this very peculiar mark of evil has infected this country like a ghost, something you can not imagine. In truth, an evil creature has arrived on this island.
"I pray with all my heart that they act there and that they have the guts to act as it seems we are missing here in the US Good luck to them and blessings and peace to the Muslim community, here and around the world. "
During Ardern's US visit last year, she was a big hit on the world stage.
Ardern was a guest guest on the show, which has four million viewers. Colbert – a Hobbit fan – has touted it as the most important thing to hit New Zealand since "Frodo dropped the ring in Mt Doom".
