While the bill leaves almost no room for progress in the Democrats-controlled chamber, King announced the proposal to YouTube conservatives Lynette Hardaway and Rochelle Richardson, known as Diamond and Silk, respectively, and , according to King, have led the effort behind the bill.
Officially known as the "Sanctuaries Act and Assisting the US Homeless and Veterans Act," the bill proposes to deny federal funding to cities that provide protections and services to undocumented immigrants , asylum seekers, refugees and others.
King began his remarks by thanking President Donald Trump for "highlighting the families of those who are the victims of illegal aliens".
Trump stressed the pressure exerted on sanctuary cities as part of his uncompromising immigration stance. In April, Trump tweeted that his administration was "closely watching" the possibility of releasing immigrants to such cities in part to retaliate against Democrats.
King was dismissed from the committee in January after making racist comments and defending the terms "white nationalist", "white supremacist" and "western civilization" in an interview with The New York Times. An effort by a handful of House Republicans to reinstate King in his committee duties failed in early June.
