Steve McClaren hinted that Paul Smyth might be allowed to leave the club on loan in order to get a regular first team football.
The 21-year-old has signed a contract extension that will keep him until the summer of 2021 at Queens Park Rangers. Although he is ready to look forward to a promising future, the Hoops boss insists that Smyth needs a normal player life to reach his potential.
Smyth burst onto the scene last season with a first goal against Cardiff City before playing 18 senior matches for the club.
McClaren said on the club's website: "Paul is an exciting talent who is constantly evolving and we are delighted to see him extend his stay with us.
"He has an excellent work ethic and is eager to learn and improve.
"Like a lot of players on the sidelines of the first team, he did not have a lot of playing time, because those with the jerseys are doing very well this season.
"It's hard for him, but I can not blame him.
"For him to progress, he has to play games. This is something we are all very wary of. "
