Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu urged the president to call the military to order over the use of its staff as bodyguards for state officials.
According to him, the practice which is rapidly gaining ground amounts to a denigration of the role of the armed forces.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Haruna Iddrisu called for immediate action on the part of the president, also commander-in-chief of the Ghanaian armed forces.
“We find it very despicable that the men and women in uniform, especially in the Ghanaian armed forces, are now reduced to holding the bags of key officials. We want him to restore the dignity and honor of the Ghanaian armed forces.
“We are with him to maintain law and order on all sides, but it becomes a secondary nuisance. This is not fair, so we urge him as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, we call for the necessary reforms of Ghana’s police services to strengthen them. ”
Haruna Iddrisu’s comments come days after election commission chairman Jean Mensa was criticized for receiving military protection.
Security analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye (Rtd) condemned the move arguing that Ghana is not in a state of emergency where the military will be used to protect state officials.
However, some justified this decision, saying that the life of the President of the EC was threatened, hence the decision to protect her.
