A final year student from Nungua Kroma Two Junior High School (JHS) in Accra, along with 15 other men, on Monday February 22 assaulted a teacher for punishing him for not doing his homework.

The student, after being punished, returned home to call the other 15, who stormed the school in a Sprinter bus to attack the teacher, inflicting facial injuries in the process.

The professor, Moses Onyameasem, was rescued by his colleagues and rushed to LEKMA hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

After the attack, the student’s mother also allegedly besieged the school and rained insults on the teacher.

The development has led to the closure of the school and others in the area.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Afia Tenge, chief of the public affairs unit of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, said at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, the teacher, accompanied by Roger Asempa, the director, came to the police station with the teacher having a head injury and wearing a bloodstained shirt.

The Applicant reported that on the same day, at around 12 noon, a student in his class and 15 other young men from Nungua town came to the school by bus and beat him, resulting in the injury.

She said she was issued a medical form to go to the hospital as frantic efforts were underway to arrest the said student and his accomplices.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday February 23, a joint stakeholder meeting including the principal, teachers and students of the school was held on the incident.

At the meeting were Monica Ankrah, Regional Director of Education for Greater Accra, and Ms. Djaba, Municipal Director of Education, Nungua District Police Commander, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Member of Parliament for Krowor, representatives of the Ghana National Teachers Association, Parent-Teachers Association and Traditional Authorities.

DSP Tenge said police provided teachers with adequate security in and around the school.

MP Momo Lartey praised the teachers for their good work and pledged to take care of Mr Onyameasem’s medical bill.

DSP Tenge said a one-day mobile patrol team received two Assembly men guards.

After the engagement, the teachers agreed to return to work next week on Monday, March 1, 2021.
