TEHRAN, March 21 – According to a new study, regularly drinking very hot tea could increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

The research comes from the University of Medical Sciences of Tehran in Iran and is published in The International Journal of Cancer. Scientists followed 50,045 people aged 40 to 75 between 2004 and 2017. During this period, 317 new cases of esophageal cancer were identified.

Drinking 700 ml of tea a day at a temperature greater than or equal to 60 ° C was badociated with a risk of esophageal cancer greater than 90%. This figure is lower than World Health Organization estimates, which consider that the consumption of hot drinks (coffee, tea or other) at a temperature above 65 ° C is a risk factor.

"Many people like to drink tea, coffee or other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of cancer of the esophagus. It is therefore advisable to wait for hot drinks to cool before drinking, "said Dr. Farhad Islami, senior author of the American Cancer Society.

In February 2018, a Chinese study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that regular consumption of hot tea could increase the risk of esophageal cancer by a factor of five. However, the results only apply to people who also consume tobacco and / or alcohol. – AFP-Relaxnews
