Study looks at costs of cancer treatment associated with continued smoking

This study was an economic evaluation and used a model to examine the costs of post-cancer treatment badociated with continued smoking in patients after the failure of their initial cancer treatment.

The model was developed to take into account a host of factors, including expected initial treatment failure rates in non-smoking patients, smoking frequency and the cost of cancer treatment after initial treatment. The cautious badysis suggests that the continuation of smoking among cancer patients adds nearly $ 11,000 per smoking patient to treatment costs after initial cancer treatment failure. The model has limitations and has not quantified the potential benefits of quitting smoking.
