A government official admitted that 46 people were killed by paramilitaries during pro-democracy protests in the capital, Khartoum.
However, doctors and hospital workers told the BBC that they thought the figure was over 100, including a child presumed to be six years old.
The violence escalated on Monday when security forces stormed a weeklong siege outside the army headquarters in Khartoum.
Residents said pro-government militias were spread throughout the city. Dozens of bodies were found in the nearby Nile.
