A popular uprising against the regime of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has seen thousands of people descend on the streets of this country of East Africa. The largely peaceful demonstrations intensified in recent days, as various armed government forces engaged in deadly clashes.

The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors has stated that 22 people, including five soldiers, have been killed in mbad demonstrations since Saturday.

On Thursday, it was reported that Bashir had withdrawn and was under house arrest, CNN sources said.

The troops were seen celebrating with protesters as Sudanese activists circulated a statement from a so-called transitional military council, announcing Bashir's withdrawal from power.
