President Akufo-Addo’s candidate for Tamale Metropolis Managing Director, Sule Salifu, has been confirmed.
He obtained 40 votes out of the 57 valid votes representing 68%. A total of 59 assembled members comprising 41 elected members and 18 government appointees voted. Two ballots were rejected.
The newly elected mayor was sworn in before a magistrate in Tamale, his cult Amadu Issifu.
Addressing the rally after taking the oath, Mr. Salifu urged all members of the assembly to avoid their political and parochial interest and prioritize the Tamale metropolis development agenda.
This, he said, is the only way the region will receive the necessary development.
Mr. Salifu said the region cannot develop without the support of the people.
He thanked the chiefs and people of the region for their support. Mr. Salifu also thanked the different political parties for their cooperation.
Northern Regional Minister Alhassan Shani, prior to confirmation, voiced concerns over what he called anarchy in the metropolis.
He said development threatens peace in the region.
Alhaji Shani urged all to help address the challenges facing the region.
He also urged members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to make the city’s development agenda their top priority.
He said the metropolis faces several challenges that need to be addressed quickly.
Alhaji Shani added that the president has good intentions for Tamale, which is why several development projects are underway.
He named some of the projects such as the on-going interchange, the water expansion project, the paving of downtown roads and the imminent launch of Phase 3 of the Tamale Airport project.
This, he said, can only be facilitated if there is effective leadership within the assembly.
