LEE'S SUMMIT, KS (KCTV) – About 45 vendors make up the Lee's Summit farmers' market, a tradition that has served the community for almost 20 years.

This is the launch of a new spring season, which means that the farmers markets are back.

"We have fresh Kombucha today. We have eight different flavors on the menu, "said Alexis Castle of Tea-Biotics.

"We sell bread! Bread and biscuits, "said Sarah Berlin, owner of the Grand Harvest Bread Company.

"I like fresh produce and know that it comes from a local farmer," said Brenda Johnson, a local farmer market customer.

And fresh, that's what you'll get. Anything sold on the market must be grown within 150 km of Lee's Summit.

"People sell so many different things. From products to breads, from meats and cheese to honey, the variety is so great, "said Berlin.

This is the third year that Berlin is part of the farmers market.

"There is such a sense of community here, so every time every salesman arrives in the morning, everyone says," Hi, how are you, I welcome you, "Berlin said.

Ashley Nowell, deputy director of downtown Lee Lee's main street, said she was growing every year. Gathering between 2,000 and 3,000 people on Saturdays.

"Every year, we see more and more suppliers apply, we see more customers arriving. It's a great way to get the community involved, "Nowell said.

And new this year, Zen Donkey Farms.

"We are a juice that has a purpose," said Kate Barker, who works at Zen Donkey Farms.

The purchase of their fresh organic juice directly supports donkeys in training to heal humans.

"We have been following equine badisted therapy for about 20 years. We use horses to help people in need. And having met donkeys a few years ago, we realized that they were just amazing creatures that can help people connect, "said Barker.

And with the sun shining, the birds chirping and the historic district in the background, many say it was a great day of opening.

"We just like to be part of it," said Berlin.

The Summit Lee's Summit Farmers Market downtown will be open every Wednesday and Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm or while supplies last.
