CAIRO – A Sudanese army official said the military authorities would not extradite the ousted president, Omar al-Bashir, but would try him at home in front of the country.
Colonel-General Omar Zein Abedeen made the remarks at a press conference held Friday in Khartoum, in the capital, to defend the withdrawal of al-Bashir regime by the army.
He said that the "eviction" was not a coup d'etat "but an answer to the demands of the population.
He added that delivering al-Bashir would be "an ugly mark on Sudan … even rebels carrying weapons, we are not extraditing them".
Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court, where he faces charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide for his deadly campaign against insurgents in Darfur.
