One of Ghana’s independent power producers, Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, has announced plans to expand into Sierra Leone.

The power company plans to deploy a 20 MWp to 50 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant in Freetown, Sierra Leone, within a year.

The company also plans to put in place another 160 MW which will be known as Benkongor Hydro within the next four years.

The company’s director of business development, Elikplim Apetorgbor, made them known to the media.

He said the total planned investment cost for the two projects is USD 700 million.

According to him, the deployment of the 20MWp – 50MWp solar photovoltaic plant by Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited is needed to increase the power supply to the capital Serra Leonean, Freetown and other parts of the country.

Mr. Apetorgbor further noted that the deployment will complete the power supply for future construction of the 160 MW Benkongor hydropower plant in four years.

He also explained that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Energy representing the government of Sierra Leone on the one hand and Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited after a meeting with experts of the Ministry of Energy and other stakeholders on March 29, 2021.
