Super Rugby: Highlanders name Kayne Hammington and Matt Faddes for hurricane shock

The Highlanders told Kayne Hammington and Matt Faddes to replace All Blacks Aaron Smith and Waisake Naholo in Friday's Hurricane clash.

Hammington's experience earned him the No. 9 jersey as the Highlanders attempt to defeat a trio of injuries at Smith, Naholo and Liam Squire and put their Super Rugby campaign back on track.

Faddes is a good choice for Naholo on the right wing, while Rob Thompson, who has not played since the second round win against the Reds, starts on the bench.

Richard Buckman will wear the No 13 jersey.

As expected, Marty Banks received the No. 10 jersey ahead of Josh Ioane, who starts on the bench.

Smith was injured in the ankle during the final stages of the Highlanders' defeat against the Blues in Auckland a fortnight ago.

The All Blacks back-half announced Monday the signing of a new two-year deal with New Zealand rugby, but said he hoped to be back in the paddock in about a month.

Until then, Hammington has a huge chance to emerge from his shadow after playing the role of Doubler for most of his career.

Folau Fakatava, a Tongan teenager, was named to the bench, while he was in defeat against the Reichels in the third round of the Highlanders.

The Highlander pack has a familiar look. Shannon Frizell was fortunate to capitalize on her promising start to the # 6 campaign.

Tom Franklin and Josh Dickson form the lock combination and Ayden Johnstone's strong first-line lead, Liam Coltman and Tyrel Lomax will attempt to repeat their dominance of the Hurricanes in the fourth round.

Teihorangi Walden was charged with holding Ngani Laumape in the middle after he scored two tries in the Highlanders' loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington.

The Highlanders' match against the Hurricanes will start at 19:35, but will be preceded by Highlanders Bravehearts against Japan's "A" at 5:00 pm, with the tour team coached by former Highlanders coach, Jamie Joseph.
