Tonight Super Girl Dreamer has told both her story and her great costume and when the show returns in two weeks, fans will finally have the chance to see Nia put herself in the place of the superhero.
Nia, played by Nicole Maines, donning the costume for the first time will be an important moment in the CW series, because Dreamer marks the fist superhero transgender American television. For Maines, it's an incredible feat, which is just starting to make its way.
"It's so amazing," Maines told ComicBook.com in a recent interview. "Of course, I was so, so, so excited about the costume, he came out so much, so amazing, the photos were so amazing, they sent me the day before they would post it." They said, "You can send this message to some of your friends, but do not post it on social networks." "Make sure it's not sent anywhere." I said, "Okay. I'm just going to send this to everyone. "
"I mean, just seeing people's reaction has been so amazing," continued Maines. "I think we're all in the same boat, where seeing the first picture looked a bit like" Wow, we have a trans superhero. "She really became real and she sank. to support girls on social networks was really, really great.I mean, because I thought, "Guys, believe me. I am much more excited than the rest of you. I panic."
This freakout encompbades more than the mere idea of a trans superhero with the visibility that stems from Super Girl. It also has a lot to do with the fact that the character is authentically described since Maines herself is a transgender woman, even if not all fans know it.
"I mean, it's very important to put trans actors in trans roles," said Maines. "Now, seeing Nia agree as Dreamer was like," We did it. "That's what we can do, it makes it so much more meaningful and so much more like … I've seen so many people on social media look like … It's really weird, people are like 'Wow'. people badume that without knowing me, they hired a cis actress to play a trans role. They say, "It's awesome, but I would have liked that they hire a trans actress." And they say to themselves, "Uh, they did it." They're like "What?" I'm like, "Hey kids."
Even with some people who did not initially realize that the character was actually played by a trans actress, Maines said it was rewarding to make a difference through her role as Nia.
"Being able to put your money in. Being able to do politics and defend minorities and marginalized people, while doing something you love, while doing entertainment, is really great," he said. Maines. "Being able to go to work every day and say," I make the difference. I add to the conversation. "When you have a bad day and you say to yourself," You know, but this show counts a lot for a lot of people, "and then every time something happens on television and people react on Social media is like: "Wow, that's a tangible difference."
Super Girl Sundays at 8 pm ET on the CW. Maines' Dreamer will be preparing for the first time in "Menagerie" on February 17th.
