Kenneth Kponor, the Volta regional director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) said former President Flt. Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings could only be immortalized when the Fourth Republic is guarded and sustained.
He said that Mr. Rawlings, who was the first President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, was a unifier, charismatic and above all enigmatic.
He gave birth to the Fourth Constitutional Republic, saw it flourish where we find it now, a nascent democracy that is the toast of many peers in Africa.
Mr Kponor, in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA), said Rawlings, displayed a charisma that obviously brought everyone together in nation-building processes.
The last time I had a meeting with him was before the 2016 general election to consult him, he said, “I will only do the consultation if I have the opportunity to cook for you and you eat”.
After the meal he said, “Let the truth guide you and put the best interests of the nation first.”
“I will always remember him for his selflessness, kind heart, humility and disciplined nature.”
Mr. David Normanyo, Volta Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, said former President Rawlings’ diversity has helped keep the peace in the country.
According to him, there have been civil wars in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa due to the diversity of ethnic groups, but since Mr. Rawlings was really interested in all Ghanaians, he did not marginalize any ethnic group and that promoted and maintained the peace of the country. .
He added that young people should emulate former President Rawlings, in terms of seeing a future and should work to achieve it, regardless of setbacks.
Reverend Seth K Mawutor, Volta Regional President, Christian Council of Churches, questioned whether the attributes of the former president had been imbibed by the Ghanaian people or some futile exercise.
He said these attributes of probity, accountability, transparency and integrity should be taught at the school level as a sign of upholding its principles.
