The Supreme Leader of the Traditional Builsa Zone in the North Builsa Municipality of the Upper East Region, Sandem-Nab Azaksuk Azantillow, attributed the strong wave of armed robbery attacks in the region to violent films that young people attend.
He observed that filmmakers introduced guns and acts of armed robbery into their films, which he said prompted young people to engage in such acts.
“Young people are interested in films like this. Having watched such films, they would like to put them into practice, hence the reason why we have a lot of armed robberies on our roads these days.
Nab Azantilow therefore called on the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to ensure that such films are discouraged in the country in order to reduce the incidence of crime.
The leader made the appeal when the Minister of the Upper East region, Mr. Stephen Mahamudu Yakubu, paid a courtesy visit to the palace to introduce himself and seek the support of the Supreme Leader.
He said that in the 1970s and 80s television drama series like “Osofo Dadzie” played by veteran film actors did not have such violent acts.
“Today we use films to commit acts of violence. Movies like this are to be blamed for the kind of situation we are going through these days. They teach our young people how to get rich overnight. The film industry needs to put an end to this. It brings us back, ”said the chef.
He urged the Minister, who heads the Regional Security Council, to ensure that the wave of armed robberies, which has resulted in loss of life in recent times, is reduced to a minimum.
On development projects in its traditional area, the Sandem-Nab appealed to the minister to ensure the completion of abandoned projects in the area for the benefit of the population.
The chief called on the District Assembly to help the regional minister realize his vision for the region.
Addressing the Supreme Leader, Yakubu said there was too much political division in the region, saying it was time for the people of the region to unite and work for development.
“Let’s put politics aside and work together. There are certain things that make us one, the languages intersect, we are in the same Region and this gives us a common destiny. No one can tell the difference between us when we travel outside the Region. All they know is that we are northerners.
The minister said the region is made up of smart, knowledgeable and intelligent people and that nothing should prevent residents from coming together to jointly develop the region.
He called on all the chiefs to help him manage the region so that together they develop the region and improve life.
Mr. Yakubu has since concluded his tour of the region, which began on March 23, with final visits to the supreme chiefs of the traditional areas of Talensi and Chiana.
