Survey finds holidaymakers are "ripped off" and airline supplements are "substandard but expensive"

Investigators who buy extras from airlines may be ripped off, an investigation said yesterday.

Supplements such as car rental or insurance can be lower – but more expensive – to independently purchased products, the probe found.

A consumer watchdog agency has cumulated the extras offered by seven airlines operating on European routes.

They compared the packages with shopping quotes.

The bundles included easyJet, which offered Europcar car hire from £ 119 between Newcastle and Malaga.

It cost £ 73 more than an independent quote from Centauro – Which Which? higher rate.

Other companies, including Wizz Air and Ryanair, offered relatively inexpensive travel insurance, but it was below the recommended coverage levels.

Which? Travel said, "In some cases, the results were a real scam.

"One-stop shopping, which allows you to organize your holiday itinerary in a few clicks, may seem convenient, but it can cost you a lot.

"Our advice is to shop around and not be seduced by the easy option of buying options."

Airport disengagement

Some 700 workers at two airports organized 12-hour strikes on wages and pensions.

The Unite members in Glasgow and Aberdeen were out at 4 am yesterday, after a break in discussions with the owner, AGS Airports.

A similar action is scheduled on sites Monday and a four-hour exit in Glasgow on Friday.

AGS stated that "robust emergency plans" were in place at both airports, but according to Unite, Glasgow's operations were "severely disrupted".
