Suzuki will set up a production plant in Ghana

The Japanese multinational car manufacturing company, Suzuki Motor Corporation, has announced its intention to set up a production unit in Ghana and make it the hub of its activities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Koichi Suzuki, Suzuki chief executive for the Middle East and Africa, revealed the news when he called President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The company joins four other automakers – Volkswagen, Nissan, Renault and Chinese Sinotruck to establish badembly plants in Ghana.

Suzuki plans to set up its distribution and after-sales service center in Ghana in partnership with Compagnie Française de l'Afrique occidentale (CFAO).

Suzuki produces 3.3 million affordable, yet dependable, safe and fuel-efficient vehicles each year with a displacement of less than 1.6 liters through its production facility in India, which produces nearly half its world production.

Mr Suzuki said the company held more than 50% stake in the Indian auto industry in collaboration with Toyota Tsusho, the commercial arm of the Toyota group which had the largest distribution network in Africa.

"We intend to find an upcoming India on the African continent," he said.

Mr Suzuki was convinced that with the introduction by the Ghana government of a new automotive policy, "we are very interested in the Ghanaian government's involvement in the initiative to produce here for develop and develop production ".

For his part, President Akufo-Addo was encouraged by Suzuki's decision to move to Ghana, saying development was a good thing, as foreign direct investment in Ghana would boost development and economic growth.

"We are interested in developing a dynamic and dynamic automotive industry in Ghana.
