A mother almost died after getting sepsis and gangrene when she went up to a spa with a shaving cut.

Hayley Thomas, of Swansea, accidentally injured his right leg with a razor just hours before getting into the hot bath of a friend with his five year old son Justin John.

The next day she woke up, covered with painful red rashes and said that her skin was on fire.

Despite her visits to A & E, it was only nine days after her immersion that she developed large, oozing wounds all over her body that she was transported to the hospital.

A biopsy revealed that the trainer had contracted septicemia from a bacterium in the spa water, which was entering her blood through her small 2 mm shaving cut.

Her skin began to fall because she died because of sepsis and gangrene. Doctors saved her limbs by filling her with an antibiotic badtail for 21 days

When Ms. Thomas's skin began to fall, doctors prepared her for the growing possibility of having to remove large areas of infected skin.

In one last attempt to stop the death of his skin, the doctors administered him an antibiotic badtail for 21 days.

This saved her legs and after three weeks in the hospital, she was finally allowed to go home.

But she was left permanently under patches of discolored skin all over her body, where the wounds were.

The single mother has promised never to enter another hot tub and speaks to warn others of the dangers.

Ms. Thomas, 46, said, "I was terrified. I've always been fit and healthy – I do not smoke, I eat healthy and exercise regularly.

"To hear that I could die because of a small cut on my leg after being relaxed in a spa was amazing, and yet I was there.

"I'll never go back to a hot tub and it scares me every time I see people coming in, especially children.

"JJ was in the hot tub with me that day, and had he caught this infection, he would not be here today. I'm so lucky that it's me who got sick and not my little man.

Ms. Thomas initially thought that she was suffering from shingles as an outbreak of chickenpox had been reported several days before entering the bathtub in May of this year.

She phoned NHS Direct for help after wounds developed under her arms and, after attending a doctor's appointment Monday night, she started antibiotic treatment.

Two months after her horrific ordeal, Ms. Thomas's skin healed well, but the redness left her a heartbreaking reminder of what she experienced. Pictured: Mrs. Thomas with her son

Ms. Thomas said, "I heard that I could die because of a small cut in my leg after being relaxed in a hot tub. It was incredible, and yet I was there. I will never go back to a spa & # 39;

Ms. Thomas prayed that she would be better, but her condition worsened over the next week, until her entire body was covered with large, oozing wounds.

She went to the emergency department of Aberystwyth Hospital, but after waiting behind patients deemed more urgent, she left and phoned NHS Direct to speak to a doctor.

Ms. Thomas immediately asked the phone to go directly to Morriston Hospital, as she did after filing her son at her parents' home.

How can you catch sepsis in a spa?

Hayley Thomas contracted a pseudomonas infection after entering the spa. The bacteria entered his blood through the 2 mm cut on his leg.

Pseudomonas infections come from waterborne bacteria that thrive at temperatures between 25 ° C and 32 ° C – the usual temperatures at which spas are heated in homes.

When they enter an open wound, the bacteria can cause gangrene formation in the skin, as well as fluid seepage from large wounds all over the body when the infection spreads into the bloodstream.

If it is not treated quickly, the infection can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening illness in which intoxication by the blood can result in multiple organ failure and death if it does not occur. is not treated with antibiotics immediately.

A biopsy confirmed that she was suffering from sepsis and gangrene, and doctors rushed to treat her with a badtail of four different types of antibiotics administered intravenously alongside the morphine and the gabapentin.

With wounds covering his arms, two wounds in his right leg and a wound in his left leg, his four limbs were at risk if the wounds deteriorated.

She said, "I could not even treat what they were saying.

"When they said I was waiting for the theater, I did not really think about the fact that it meant that they would cut parts of my body."

"I just begged them to save my life. I would have done anything to not die in this hospital bed.

Mrs. Thomas was constantly monitored for days for any change in her condition and, miraculously, she began to recover.

After a week of surveillance at Morriston Hospital, she was stable enough to be transferred to Singleton Hospital for treatment by the Dermatology Department.

Her wounds were photographed for medical training purposes because her case of pseudonomas was the most extreme that the specialists had ever seen, she said.

Two months after her horrific ordeal, Ms. Thomas's skin healed well, but the redness left her a heartbreaking reminder of what she experienced.

Ms. Thomas added, "I have almost lost my life and the fact that I am still here has made me so grateful for each day that I spend with my son.

"Every moment of my life when I watch it grow is more precious than ever, and I will never take it for granted."
