STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Lars Idermark has decided to immediately step down as president of Swedbank, the bank said in a statement on Friday.

Swedbank is involved in a growing money-laundering scandal involving Danske Bank, which revealed last year that its Estonian branch had been used to transfer 230 billion euros in suspicious payments between 2007 and 2015 .

"I concluded that media attention was not compatible with my role as CEO at Sodra," Idermark said in a statement issued by the bank.

"Therefore, I decided that the best alternative was to immediately leave the position of chairman of the board of Swedbank."
