LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) – Former French Open champion Iga Swiatek stormed the fourth round of Wimbledon on Friday as her relentless pressure proved too much for Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu, who succeeded a lone score on the scoreboard in a 6-1-0 demolition.
Seven-seeded Polish Swiatek arrived at Wimbledon after winning just one grass match, but looked very comfortable smothering her opponent early on to reach the last 16 with her third victory in two sets.
The 20-year-old, who won the Roland Garros title in 2020, lost just eight serve points in the game and half of them came in a single game.
She beat her opponent twice to take a 5-0 lead, before Begu finally held the serve, and then showed courage to accompany the punitive consistency of her shots on the ground when she saved three break points to hold on and take the first set.
The second set was even more one-sided as the Swiatek swept away the dying embers of Begu’s resistance to embark on the next round.
