The fact that the switch for Nintendo has developed in the meantime quite remarkable success can easily be understood on the basis of sales figures published by the Japanese gaming company. Now, it seems that they are looking for new ways to take advantage of the switch's popularity – and are also considering a smaller, more mobile version, they say.
As stated by Nikkei, the Japanese economic service, citing internal sources at Nintendo, they are working on a smaller, cheaper version of the switch, which should be more mobile-based. However, we want to do without some features of the normal Nintendo switch, in which the report gives no details on what Nintendo specifically wants to delete.
Rumors of a new change have been around since October 2018, but apparently, instead of looking for ways to improve it, we are simply looking for ways to make the existing system cheaper. It would be conceivable, for example, a smaller display and therefore less expensive. Even a direct integration of the previously plug-in controller into the system would be possible, even if it can no longer generate additional revenue by selling the controller as an ancillary product.
For Nintendo, a cheaper switch would probably be a way to boost sales again this year. The company has sold around 32 million switching consoles to date, but has recently revised down its sales forecast for the current fiscal year from just 20 to 17 million.
Until now, of course, Nintendo will not officially comment on the subject. However, according to Nikkei, the company has already provided information to suppliers and game makers on cheaper switch variant projects. The introduction of the device should therefore be expected later this year.
