A three-year strategic agreement between Ghana and Switzerland aimed at tackling climate change in the country was launched in Accra.
This was announced after the signing of an agreement between the two countries, represented by Simonetta Sommaruga, Swiss Minister of Environment, Traffic, Energy and Communication, and Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Ghanaian Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The agreement, known as Switzerland’s New Strategy for International Cooperation (SECO) 2021-2024, aims to contribute to a resilient and empowered Ghana, fostering economic growth and sustainable ownership.
Speaking on behalf of the Swiss, Simonetta Sommaruga said a similar bilateral agreement was signed in Ghana more than six months ago.
She explained that this new agreement will therefore focus mainly on measures for the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement which aims to promote integrated, holistic and balanced approaches that will help governments to implement their contributions. determined at the national level (NDC) through voluntary international cooperation.
She also presented SECO’s country strategy for Ghana, which is a SECO priority country for economic development cooperation. For the period 2021-2024, Switzerland intends to allocate a total of 65 million Swiss francs to economic development cooperation in Ghana.
Article six (6) of the Paris Agreement on Carbon Markets is an innovative voluntary instrument available to countries to mobilize finance and catalyze private sector investments for the implementation of nationally determined contributions .
“This program will allow us to continue our fruitful and deep collaboration over the next four years and to further strengthen our bonds; bonds which have been friendly and constructive for a very long time based on mutual respect and the will to find constructive challenges for the challenges of the job, “she said.
For her part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, expressed the government’s appreciation to the Swiss government for its continued support.
“It is truly welcome. We are pleased to express the gratitude of the government and people of Ghana to the government and people of Switzerland for their continued support for the progress and development of Ghana. I firmly believe that the measure we We have just crossed by launching the next phase of our bilateral cooperation will only continue to elevate our relations to higher heights, ”she said.
The signing of the cooperation agreement not only demonstrates the good relations existing between the two countries, but it also highlights the strong determination of Ghana and Switzerland to take early action to mitigate climate change and contribute to the achievement of the desired global target of two degrees of temperature reduction as set out in the Paris Agreement.
SECO’s thematic priorities are to promote attractive framework conditions for sustainable growth and to support initiatives that create more and better jobs and decent income opportunities.
In addition, cooperation between Ghana and Switzerland would focus on increasing the use of renewable energy through the use of energy efficient stoves in homes and improving waste management, between others.
