After each battle of Verzuz, co-creators Timbaland and Swizz Beatz have a habit of hopping on Instagram Live, publicly sharing their thoughts on the competition, and giving fans a feel for future battles they can hope to see. This weekend, following on from the historic D’Angelo and Friends Verzuz, the mega-producers surprised viewers of their post-show by announcing an upcoming battle that will particularly excite hip hop fans and New- Yorker.
“Play one of the records of Who’s coming next, and I’ll play one too,” Swizz said during the IG Live session. Songs like “Incarcerated Scarfaces”, “Run” with Jadakiss and “Verbal Intercourse” were played, then the Ruff Ryders beatmaker said: “Raekwon vs. Ghostface [Killah]. Wait my brother, take him back to … the streets! Let’s go back to the streets.
“Whoooo !!” He continued. “What are we talking about, New York?” Staten Island, stand up! Wu vs. Wu. Raekwon vs. Ghostface Killah … Dates to come. “
The revelation of Verzuz’s co-founders comes following D’Angelo’s performance on Saturday (February 27) at the Apollo Theater – a show that was originally intended to be a Valentine’s Day contest between the singer ” Lady ”and Maxwell.
“It didn’t work … the fact that D’Angelo was always ready to go … and motivated, we had to celebrate it … no matter who was on stage with him,” Swizz explained of the decision to let the singer of “Nothing Even Matters” play alone. “We had to celebrate this king because, as you can see, these songs that he played tonight, man, that’s real music, and it’s a party scene … and we don’t. couldn’t play with him. We had to let him have his garden because he came and showed himself.
No official flyers have been made for the Raekwon and Ghostface Killah Verzuz, but a friendly competition between the animators – who are friends and members of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan – will certainly be a competition for the books.
