It seems that the family of MCU directors may be closer than we thought. Although speculation is raging about who could replace James Gunn in the director's chair for The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3well Thor: Ragnarok director Taika WaititiThe Oscar-nominated filmmaker has rejected this idea more than anyone else.
Waititi arrived today at the current TCA event to attend the FX panel and discuss his next series. What we do in the shade, a television series based on the 2014 film of the same name that he co-directed, co-wrote and starred in Jemaine Clement. (The first official trailer of the series was dropped today, by the way.) But of course, questions about his other projects have come up. Deadline reported on Waititi's comments on GotGV3, his Star wars series for the Disney + streaming service, and more.

First, will Waititi take over Gunn? Definitely not.
However, I always hang out with those [Marvel] guys and talk about new things. I want to make another movie with them.
After confirming that he had not taken any formal meeting with Marvel before deciding not to proceed guardiansWaititi clarified his reasoning:
For me, these are the films of James (Gunn). Entering something like that with his stamp on his films, it would be like going home to someone and saying, "Hey, I'm your new dad, and that's how we now make butter sandwiches." peanut. It's a little embarrbading.
While Waititi would undoubtedly make better peanut butter sandwiches than my father, his decision not to step on his feet and, apparently, to stand by Gunn's side (which Disney / Marvel dismissed from his fabricated indignation in order to to distance oneself from his jokes and his unsavory tweets years back) is a respectable one. It's also a smart choice because he wants to make more movies with Marvel and has a Star wars TV series in collaboration with Disney +. This is what Waititi had to say about The mandalorian:
It was incredible. [Jon] Favreau is a genius … it's fun to do something in the Star wars universe. His [strange] to see a stormtrooper, and then when you make a scene with 50 or 60 of them, it's amazing.

So, not really much to do there, but for fans who are concerned that Waititi's characteristic style is distorting the new Star wars history far from its basic sensibility, something that fans always hold Rian Johnson responsible for their criticism, he has also responded to these concerns. Could The mandalorian will it benefit from Waititi's colorful, energetic and improvised style?
"A little, but Star wars is very different from the Marvel style. The tone of the first films must really be respected, that's what fans like. You can not be disrespectful. My tone is really in there.
Although this does not seem to be the case, Waititi will let us know. Guardians of the Galaxy at any time, fans have The mandalorian to wait. He also has the bizarre adventure of the dramatic comedy of the Second World War Jojo Rabbit opening sometime this year. Then, in an unpredictable future, Waititi may well be back for another round in the MCU. Crossed fingers!
