Peter Kwame Abrebrese
Reverend Peter Kwame Abrebrese, former Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) responsible for the Customs Division and a member of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Bank (EXIM), called on Ghanaians living in the diaspora to take advantage of the reduction of reference values and customs duties on vehicles to import goods into the country.
Mr Abebrese made the call after the plenary session of the Economic Management Team, where Vice President Mahamudu Bawumiah announced a 50% reduction in benchmarks and benchmarks. 30% of the rights of the vehicles.
He added that it was time for Ghanaian exporters of goods and services in the country to seize this opportunity to import more, because "it now means that taxes on goods at the port have been reduced".
Explaining the reference values, the Assistant Commission told DAILY HERITAGE that the reference values are government-generated invoices on the actual price of goods imported into the country and applied by customs officials.
"What we do is that sometimes importers undervalue the prices of imported goods in order to thwart the system, so the government generates these benchmarks so that the charges become central to generating revenue." for the nation. "
"With the current reduction, this means that it will stabilize the prices of goods and services while increasing government revenues," he said.
Reverend Abebrese said that the government of the new patriotic party was a government to listen to, because for some years now, importers had been right to complain about the heavy port taxes, but the successive governments have not answered the call.
Reverend Abebrese told DAILY HERITAGE, in an interview, that because of these high charges in the port of Ghana, imports into the neighboring port of Togo had increased by 300%, while those in the Port of Tema were 4%.
He said the current arrangements could prevent imports through the Togolese port and elsewhere and thus increase the number of containers so that goods transiting through the port of Tema.
Reverend Abebrese said the new system would help workers and agents clear their goods quickly and also promote the free flow of goods and services to the port.
He advised port customs officials to allow the system to work properly so that the prices of vehicles and other goods in the country would be reduced accordingly.
