A finance professor at the University of Ghana’s business school advised the government to rename the Agyapa Mineral Royalty deal before reintroducing it into parliament.

Professor Godfred A. Bokpin said a name change would be beneficial in helping MPs and civil society organizations (CSOs) see the deal in a new light.

This, he said, was due to the bad press that Agyapa’s name had gained after its first introduction to Parliament.

He also advised the government to revise the deal and urged parliament to give the executive the benefit of the doubt by reintroducing the deal.

Speaking on the JoyNews Newsfile on Saturday, Professor Bokpin said: “I am open to the idea of ​​Agyapa returning and urge that we give the government the benefit of the doubt to see the revisions that have been made. .

“But I would suggest that, given – not just on the part of the minority – given the position of civil societies, academics and others, the government would take another look, a critical look at the form it intends.” present to parliament and incorporate it.

“And if possible, because you see it for branding purposes, the name Agyapa immediately resurrects so much now given what has happened. So I would suggest the government look at branding again, then content, because in situating the discussion between the larger context of monetizing income, commodities, commodification, etc., I think this is nothing new.

According to him, the idea of ​​the Agyapa agreement is not bad and should rather be encouraged as it has been done for other sectors and commodities.

“I think we’ve done it with Cocoa, we’ve done it with other products and natural resources, so there’s a context to that. In fact, in 2017, 2018, the IMF had a reason to say that the excessive monetization of government revenues needs to be reconsidered.
