Former President John Dramani Mahama has said the government led by Akufo-Addo must accept that its incompetence has plunged the nation into the current economic crisis.

According to him, the mismanagement of the economy, the thirst for consumer spending and the desire to spend beyond our means to win the elections are at the origin of the general misery of the country.

He argued that the Ghanaian economy is in ruins, not necessarily because of COVID-19.

“Our debt has swelled to unsustainable levels – exceeding 80% of GDP – putting us at very high risk of default. Almost all of our tax revenue is used to service our debt and the effect has been the introduction of several new taxes. This has led to galloping increases in the prices of goods and services. This is mainly responsible for the difficulties that Ghanaians are going through now.

The former leader and 2020 presidential candidate of the main opposition party NDC provided an update in a Facebook post some time ago.
