The Tamale High Court on Friday sentenced three 19-year-old men sentenced to forced labor for possession of narcotics without legal authorization.

The convicts, Fatawu Tininya, 29, Mashawudu Iddrisu, 20, and Zaaku Mahama, 19, were arrested last Thursday in Savelugu with 13 sacks of cannabis and a half. The court presided over by Judge Richard Kogyapwah sentenced the trio on his own guilty plea and sentenced him to 19 years each.

The president of the court also confiscated five motorcycles, which the convicts used to transport to transport the Indian hemp to the state.

He also issued a special recommendation to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the regional police commander to ensure that the police officers who arrested the convicts were rewarded.

The facts presented by the Northern Region Prosecutor, Mr. Salia Abdul Quddus, indicate that, following intelligence reports that a group of people were transporting hemp from the Northeast region to the North , Savelugu police proceeded to Yong primary school in Savelugu during which the convicts were arrested with the substances, but two other accomplices managed to escape.

At their arrest, the convicts claimed possession of the 13 and a half bags of substances and designated three people as suppliers.

Mr. Quddus said the police also seized five motorcycles during the operation.

The convicts were taken to the regional police headquarters in Tamale where preliminary testing of substances within the drug enforcement unit revealed that these substances were cannabis.

They were then charged and brought to court, he said.
