Some 320 acres on 413 hectares of paddy fields owned by the northern regional president of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ibrahim Mobila, have been consumed by the fire.

The incident took place in a farming community in the North East Gonja District, Savannah region, a day before the NDC protest in Tamale on Wednesday.

The fire did not affect any neighboring farmland.

Speaking to the media, Alhaji Mobila noted that the fire destroyed at least 85% of the farm before some members of the Kujere community extinguished the flames.

He said although he suspected arson, he did not report the matter to the police.

Instead, he’d rather rain spells down on his suspect and the arsonist’s family.

“This person already mentioned to me when we were planting, that no one had been able to cultivate (on the land), but I came to do it.

“I left the person to God who is the IGP in the world, I am not talking about the IGP of the police… I denounce the person to God to punish him, his mother and his brothers”, he said .

However, he praised the efforts of the Kujere community to put out the fire even in his absence.

“The villagers have done very well, about 85% have been burned but at least I have about 15% of which I can recover a seat for next year,” he added.
