The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) called on all African leaders to pursue what it called a people-centered and planet-sensitive transformation agenda, in line with the African Union Agenda 2063.

IDEG launched this call on Saturday, May 25, 2019 in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Emmanuel Akwetey, on the occasion of the celebration of the 56th anniversary of the African Union Day. (AU).

The AU 2063 Agenda summarizes the global agenda for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The theme of this year's celebration is "Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons".

This theme reflects the shared willingness of African leaders to face the formidable challenges of migration facing Africa.

According to the IDEG in its communiqué, "the theme of this year's African Union Day should build strong links and promote international cooperation and partnerships to create economic opportunities for citizens,
especially the African youth to stay on the continent and to contribute to the development of Africa. "

He noted that "notwithstanding visa restrictions and freedom of movement
movement of people, goods and services, intra-African trade remains the driving force behind
stronger growth and transformational development on the continent. "

He added that "Africa's transformation agenda must therefore give priority to the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)".

This, he said, would create sustainable jobs for young people in Africa.

The statement urged Africans to begin to engage freely in common trade for economic development and empowerment of its people, to eliminate language and communication barriers.

He stressed that "we must begin to learn the language of each to realize the bond and unity that have been the basis of the formation of the OAU, now the AU".

"Africa today is increasingly adopting a new wave of sustainable development through the revolution of education and skills based on science, technology and innovation, as reflected in the 2063 Agenda of the World. 'UA,' he said.

According to the statement, "focusing on educating well-educated and empowered Africans requires greater efforts to build strong economies and create better opportunities for Africans".
