Tax Relief Granted to Internet Businesses for the Installation of Broadband Optical Fiber

Internet companies will benefit from a 100% tariff relief from the Scottish Government for the installation of broadband fiber in Scotland.

The relief of non-domestic tariffs aims to encourage telecom companies to increase the availability of high-speed Internet for Scots.

The tax incentive will be in place as of April 1 and the last 10 years, five more than the British government's offer to broadband providers.

Connectivity Minister Paul Wheelhouse visited a CityFibre excavation in Stirling to announce tariff relief and see some of the work already underway to improve Scottish digital infrastructure.

Mr. Wheelhouse said, "We have been listening to companies on what would help them play their part in achieving our ambitions and we are determined that Scotland will continue to be in the vanguard of the digital revolution.

"Infrastructure and connectivity are essential to the digital growth of our economy. I am pleased to announce that, effective April 1, we will be proposing non-domestic tariff relief for all newly laid fibers.

"This important commitment will help create long-term skilled jobs and make Scotland the best place to invest in digital infrastructure in the UK.

"Full fiber investment projects, such as CityFibre in Stirling, complement the Scottish government's goal of ensuring access to a minimum of ultra-fast broadband services for all locals in Scotland.

"While telecommunications is reserved, we will build on the success of the 400 million pound Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband program and invest an additional 600 million pounds to put Scotland at the forefront of digital connectivity through our program. Reaching 100% or R100.

"I hope companies will benefit from this relief to increase their investment in Scotland while contributing to the inclusive growth of the Scottish economy."
