The term "singularity", which is often heard today, comes from my field, theoretical physics. It designates a point in space and time where the gravitational field becomes infinite. In the center of a black hole, for example, we could find a singularity. It also refers to a mathematical term in which a certain function also becomes infinite. But the kind of singularity you've probably heard about most recently is called "The Technological Singularity" and, although it's not a new concept, it's in become a clbadic topic of conversation.
