Improving the gum health of diabetics at risk of developing gum disease is essential for preventing health complications, said a Luxembourg technology company.
On the occasion of World Oral Health Day, the Taradon Lab raises awareness of its users to the increased risk of gum disease, or periodontitis, in diabetics, particularly those whose blood sugar is not controlled.
Studies suggest that there is a two-way relationship between periodontal disease and disease: severe gum disease could affect blood glucose control and increase the risk of complications.
In 2017, a survey conducted in the UK revealed that 50% of people with diabetes had not received any information about the risk of gum disease from their dentist.
Taradon Lab, a company that has developed products designed to reduce sugar levels in saliva, hopes to reduce the risk and burden of the relationship between gum disease and diabetes.
The AnOxident balanced The range of mouth care, which includes four interdependent products, is designed to regulate the amount of glucose in the mouth.
"Saliva protective mechanisms play a vital role in oral health and the integration of these natural molecules into mouth care products could help reduce the risk of oral complications," said the author. Dr. Jean Paul Perraudin, General Manager and Researcher at the Taradon Laboratory.
"It could improve the daily oral health of people with diabetes by helping to control unwanted bacteria, reducing oxidative stress, improving natural oral defenses and avoiding gum problems."
Healthy gums are badociated with a lower risk of diabetes-related complications and improved kidney and blood vessel function, according to a study conducted in 2018 by UCL Eastman Dental.
In addition to maintaining good oral health, diabetics or people at risk for diabetes can reduce the severity of gum disease by properly controlling their blood sugar levels and consuming healthy foods.
