A delegation from the metropolis of Tema and Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) made a four-day working visit to the Danish city of Aarhus to improve their knowledge of creating effective and sustainable management water to Tema.
The two sides signed an official agreement protocol to formalize their strategic water cooperation at the Aarhus City Hall during the visit.
They also agreed that the cooperation was logical in that Tema and Aarhus had much in common, so that lessons learned from the effective wastewater management system in Aarhus would be useful to Tema Metropolis.
"Our two cities have a lot in common. We have about the same size and large ports, so it makes sense to cooperate, "said Jacob Bundsgaard, mayor of Aarhus.
Wastewater problem
"We have a serious problem with wastewater in particular," said Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, Tema's Metropolitan General Manager (MCE).
He added: "Our lakes and lagoons are very polluted because of the lack of effective treatment of wastewater, but if you look at the rivers, lakes and lagoons in Aarhus, you do not see any highly polluted water because there are wastewater treatment in place. "
He said that it was one of the areas where they were looking for ideas, hence the visit to Aarhus and future cooperation.
Mr Anang-La added that he was very grateful to sign the memorandum of understanding because he would now be able to always consult Aarhus for guidance and guidance and said he was optimistic as to the fact that cooperation would go a long way in helping the city of Tema.
For his part, Bundsgaard said he was happy to share his city's skills and know-how to improve Tema's water supply and wastewater management, adding that Aarhus also had to gain. this cooperation.
"Tema is a city in motion. They have a big port. They are the gateway to Ghana and the rest of Africa. We can use Tema as a stepping stone to cooperation with other African countries, which also represents an interesting potential for private companies in Aarhus and the region.
Members of the delegation also visited a modern wastewater treatment plant and a water treatment plant in Aarhus.
The team also visited local Danish companies; namely Grundfos, AVK and Kamstrup, which produce a world-clbad technology for the water sector.
