A Malawi court on Saturday ordered the electoral council not to announce the results of the May 21 presidential election, as a result of complaints from the opposition for election fraud.

The High Court of South-East Africa ordered the publication of the results of the presidential election and a recount in one-third of the constituencies.

The electoral body stopped publishing the updated election results Friday after receiving 147 complaints from some of the parties involved in Tuesday's vote.

The main opposition party of the Malawi Congress, Lazarus Chakwera, went to court for what he claimed was irregularities in the results of 10 of the country's 28 districts.

Opposition parties have complained about the change in figures on several counting sheets.

The capital court, Lilongwe, ordered on Saturday that "the announcement of the results of the presidential election be suspended until the results … are verified by a transparent report of the ballots in the presence representatives of political parties contesting the elections ".
